Francis Sicat: My Story
Migration is a very discussed issue in our world today and there are many views towards it and i shall explain my own views and give a personal reflection on Migration. Throughout my life, i have always thought that everyone should be able to gain the life that they try to strive for, whether it be in a civilized society or someone fleeing for a better life and a new opportunity. First and foremost I am a migrant myself as i have travelled here from the Philippines and i guess with the result of me being allowed to settle here and have a better life, my view is that i want the best for every immigrant and share our land with them.
My views have been molded throughout everyday life and this being that i do support the migrants coming into Australia. My parents didn’t want to be stuck in Philippines for the rest of their lives so they decided to make a choice and move for the brighter, better future. My father had moved to Australia 3 or 2 years before my mother and i had moved to Australia in 2000 and i am so grateful that we were let in as we seeked a new opportunity and a better future for our lives. Most of my dad’s side had already moved to Australia and it was just a matter of time that we had reunited and to look at it now in 2015 that majority of our family are in Australia we are all happy and blessed to settle in this great land. Growing up in Australia molded me to the person i am today because there could be a major difference in the way i could’ve grown up in the Philippines and in Australia. Since I had moved here i had gained many new traits and new skills when i was a small child. I had only known one language which was filipino, but when i had been around pre-school children i was required to learn more english and now i can barely speak filipino. I also learnt how to adapt to the Australian lifestyle and bring my culture and Australian culture together and embrace them at once. Moving here as a migrant has certainly made me more privileged and grateful for the life that i live, because as a migrant searching for a new haven you can see that Australia is a great model for raising your new life and growing up to find opportunities.
Being raised in Philippines is a very hard life, as they don’t have the same resources or privileges that we have here. This makes me truly grateful that as a migrant, i was accepted here and given the opportunity for a safer, tranquil life. This has given me the view that all migrants should be let in as they only deserve the best for themselves, because they are fleeing from war, conflict and trouble so they should be given somewhere to stay and experience something great as i had. If all migrants can experience the gifts that i was given throughout my life from this land, then we would have such a great country.
